Nostoc is a genus of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. It is a type of photosynthetic microorganism that thrives in moist environments, forming slimy, gelatinous masses that can be found on soil surfaces, including gravel driveways, lawns, and in aquatic habitats. Nostoc can be recognized by its distinctive appearance: it forms dark, glistening mats that may look like jelly or slime when wet. These mats can be particularly prevalent in areas with poor drainage or excessive moisture. While nostoc is not a true algae, it shares similarities in that it performs photosynthesis to generate energy. Its growth is often fostered by high levels of nitrogen and moisture. In some cases, nostoc can contribute to the formation of “bloom” conditions, particularly in water bodies where it can disrupt ecosystems.
