No, conjugation cannot occur if one of the bacteria is dead. Conjugation requires active, living cells to form the necessary physical connection (the pilus) and to transfer genetic material. A dead bacterium lacks the cellular machinery and energy required for conjugation, making the process impossible in such cases. Both the donor and recipient cells need to be viable for conjugation to occur.
