Peroxisomes are found in virtually all eukaryotic cells, including those of plants, animals, fungi, and protists. However, they are absent in prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria and archaea. Some specialized cells may have fewer or more peroxisomes depending on their metabolic requirements. The universality of peroxisomes in eukaryotes highlights their essential role in fundamental metabolic processes.
