Peroxisomes are capable of growth and division, enabling them to proliferate within the cell. However, they lack their own DNA and ribosomes, so they cannot replicate independently like mitochondria. Instead, new peroxisomes arise either by fission of existing peroxisomes or by de novo biogenesis from the endoplasmic reticulum. This process depends on the import of peroxisomal proteins synthesized in the cytosol, ensuring the organelle maintains its function and number according to cellular needs.
