Peroxisomes are distributed throughout the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, with their number and size varying depending on the cell type and metabolic demands. They are especially abundant in liver and kidney cells, where detoxification and lipid metabolism are intensive. Unlike organelles such as mitochondria, peroxisomes do not contain their own DNA but import all necessary proteins post-translationally from the cytosol. Their biogenesis can occur de novo from the endoplasmic reticulum or by division of pre-existing peroxisomes.
