The primary function of peroxisomes is to catalyze oxidative reactions that break down toxic substances and very-long-chain fatty acids, thereby protecting the cell from oxidative damage. They detoxify reactive oxygen species, particularly hydrogen peroxide, via catalase enzymes. Additionally, peroxisomes contribute to lipid biosynthesis, including the synthesis of plasmalogens essential for cell membrane integrity. These functions collectively maintain cellular health and metabolic balance.
