Peroxisomes appear as small, spherical or oval-shaped organelles, typically ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 micrometers in diameter. They are enclosed by a single membrane and contain a dense, granular matrix composed of various enzymes involved in oxidative metabolism. Under electron microscopy, peroxisomes exhibit a homogeneous appearance with some electron-dense crystalline inclusions representing catalase or other enzymes. Their number and size can vary greatly depending on cell type and metabolic activity.
