Peroxisomes and lysosomes differ primarily in their function, enzyme content, and origin. Lysosomes are acidic organelles that contain hydrolytic enzymes responsible for degrading cellular waste and recycling macromolecules. Peroxisomes perform oxidative metabolic processes, breaking down fatty acids and detoxifying reactive oxygen species with enzymes like catalase. Lysosomal enzymes are synthesized in the rough ER and modified in the Golgi, whereas peroxisomal proteins are synthesized on free ribosomes and imported directly. Also, lysosomes are part of the endomembrane system, peroxisomes are not.
