Intracellular digestion occurs within the cell where food particles are engulfed into vacuoles and broken down by lysosomal enzymes, typical in unicellular organisms like amoeba; whereas extracellular digestion occurs outside the cells within a body cavity where digestive enzymes break down food and the nutrients are then absorbed by cells, a process seen in most multicellular animals including humans.
