The principal fates of pyruvate generated in glycolysis are: 1) Conversion to Acetyl-CoA: When oxygen is available, pyruvate is converted into acetyl-CoA in the mitochondria, entering the citric acid cycle for ATP production. 2) Lactic Acid Fermentation: Under anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted to lactate, regenerating NAD+ to ensure continued glycolysis. 3) Alcoholic Fermentation: In organisms like yeast, pyruvate is converted into ethanol and CO2 in the absence of oxygen to regenerate NAD+ for glycolysis.
