Glycolysis does not occur in the mitochondria. It takes place in the cytoplasm. However, the pyruvate produced during glycolysis is transported into the mitochondria if oxygen is available, where it is further processed in the citric acid cycle for aerobic respiration. Therefore, glycolysis is a cytoplasmic process, while mitochondrial processes occur after glycolysis, during aerobic metabolism.
