Most organisms, including nearly all eukaryotes and prokaryotes, perform glycolysis as a basic and essential metabolic pathway. However, some specialized organisms, such as certain obligate anaerobes, might use alternative pathways (like the Entner-Doudoroff pathway) instead of glycolysis. Despite this, glycolysis is found in the majority of living organisms as a central metabolic pathway.
