Biodiversity may be lower in the rhizosphere compared to bulk soil due to selective pressures imposed by root exudates. These chemicals favor specific microbial groups adapted to utilize them, reducing overall diversity but increasing functional specialization. Strong competition and microenvironmental changes also limit survival of generalist species.
