In eukaryotic cells, the Krebs cycle is located in the mitochondrial matrix, the innermost part of the mitochondria. This location enables efficient processing of acetyl-CoA and immediate transfer of generated high-energy electrons to the adjacent electron transport chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane. In prokaryotic cells, where mitochondria are absent, the Krebs cycle takes place in the cytoplasm.
