DNA replication happens in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. This is the central compartment where the genetic material is located, and where it can be effectively replicated and protected from external damage. In prokaryotic cells, which do not have a membrane-bound nucleus, DNA replication occurs in the cytoplasm, where the bacterial chromosome is located. Despite the different locations, the process in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells involves similar molecular mechanisms, such as the unwinding of the DNA helix, the synthesis of new DNA strands, and the regulation of replication checkpoints.
