The rhizosphere is the zone of soil influenced by root secretions and biological activity. The rhizoplane is the actual root surface, including tightly adhering soil particles and microbial biofilms. The rhizoplane forms the boundary between root tissues and soil. Microbial communities in each zone differ in diversity and function, with the rhizoplane being more selective and densely colonized.
