Rhizosphere priming is the process by which root activity alters microbial decomposition of soil organic matter. When roots release exudates, they stimulate microbial growth, leading to increased or decreased breakdown of native organic carbon. This effect changes carbon cycling and nutrient availability. Priming may be positive (enhanced decomposition) or negative (suppressed mineralization), depending on root-microbe interactions.
