How much ATP does the Krebs cycle produce?
Answered
In one complete turn of the Krebs cycle, 1 molecule of GTP (or ATP) is produced directly through substrate-level phosphorylation. Additionally, the cycle generates 3 NADH and 1 FADH₂, which subsequently donate electrons to the electron transport chain, indirectly producing ATP. 3 NADH yield about 7.5 ATP (3 × 2.5 ATP) and 1 FADH₂ yields about 1.5 ATP. Combined, this results in approximately 10 ATP equivalents per cycle turn. Since two acetyl-CoA molecules are produced from one glucose, total ATP production per glucose via the Krebs cycle is about 20 ATP equivalents.
