Usually, the rhizosphere has less oxygen than bulk soil due to high microbial respiration and root oxygen demand. However, some plant roots, especially in waterlogged or compact soils, can leak oxygen into the rhizosphere, creating micro-oxic zones. These small oxygenated regions support aerobic microbes, while the overall rhizosphere remains a gradient between oxic and anoxic conditions.
