Generally, plants do not reabsorb their own exudates directly, but root exudates indirectly benefit them by altering the rhizosphere chemistry and microbial composition. Some exudates mobilize nutrients like phosphorus or iron, making them more available for uptake. Others recruit beneficial microbes that assist in nutrient acquisition or disease resistance. In a few specific cases, such as under stress conditions, plants may take up organic molecules released into the rhizosphere, but this is not the primary function of exudation.
