Yes, marine plants such as seagrasses and mangroves do form a rhizosphere, although it’s adapted to submerged and often anoxic environments. These roots exude oxygen and organic compounds into surrounding sediments, influencing microbial populations. Sulfate-reducing bacteria, nitrogen-fixing microbes, and other anaerobes commonly inhabit the marine rhizosphere. Although less studied than terrestrial systems, the marine rhizosphere plays crucial roles in nutrient cycling, sediment stabilization, and carbon sequestration in coastal ecosystems.
