ATP is produced in anaerobic respiration through glycolysis, which breaks down glucose into pyruvate. In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate is converted into either lactic acid or ethanol and carbon dioxide, depending on the type of fermentation. This process produces a small amount of ATP.
