During anaerobic cellular respiration, glucose is partially broken down to generate ATP without the use of oxygen. This process includes glycolysis, which produces pyruvate and ATP, and subsequent fermentation, which regenerates NAD⁺ by converting pyruvate into either lactic acid or ethanol and carbon dioxide, depending on the organism.
