Glycolysis is triggered by the need for ATP in the cell. When cellular energy levels are low, glycolysis is activated to produce ATP. High levels of glucose or insulin (after meals) trigger glycolysis, while the accumulation of AMP or fructose-2,6-bisphosphate also signals the need for energy production. Hormonal control through insulin also triggers glycolysis in response to feeding.
