The three fates of pyruvate in carbohydrate metabolism are: 1) Conversion to Acetyl-CoA: Under aerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted into acetyl-CoA, which enters the citric acid cycle and contributes to ATP production. 2) Lactic Acid Fermentation: In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate is converted into lactate, regenerating NAD+ for glycolysis to continue. 3) Alcoholic Fermentation: In some cells (like yeast), pyruvate is converted to ethanol and CO2 under anaerobic conditions, again regenerating NAD+ to sustain glycolysis.
