The primary metabolic fates of pyruvate are: 1) Conversion to Acetyl-CoA in aerobic conditions, which then enters the citric acid cycle for ATP production, 2) Lactic Acid Fermentation in anaerobic conditions, where pyruvate is reduced to lactate to regenerate NAD+, allowing glycolysis to continue, 3) Alcoholic Fermentation in yeast and certain microorganisms, where pyruvate is converted into ethanol and CO2 to regenerate NAD+ and continue glycolysis. These are the primary fates that pyruvate follows depending on the availability of oxygen.
