Glycolysis is not entirely irreversible. While most of the reactions are reversible, there are three key steps in glycolysis that are irreversible under normal cellular conditions. These steps involve the enzymes hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, and pyruvate kinase, which catalyze reactions that are highly exergonic and thus cannot be easily reversed.
