Telomeres can be extended by activating the enzyme telomerase, which adds DNA repeats to the chromosome ends. In laboratory settings, this has been shown to lengthen telomeres. However, activating telomerase in humans has not yet been safely applied in clinical practice due to the risk of encouraging cancerous growth. While it is not currently possible to directly extend telomeres in humans outside of experimental settings, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity, stress management, and a balanced diet may help protect telomeres from excessive shortening.
