Sucrose enters glycolysis after it is hydrolyzed into glucose and fructose by the enzyme sucrase. Glucose can then enter glycolysis directly. Fructose is converted into intermediates that are also fed into the glycolytic pathway. In humans, fructose is often phosphorylated to fructose-6-phosphate, which can enter the pathway in a similar manner to glucose.
