Telomeres play a critical role in biological aging by limiting the number of divisions a cell can undergo. As cells divide, the telomeres shorten with each division due to the inability of the DNA replication machinery to fully replicate the very ends of chromosomes. When telomeres become critically short, cells either enter senescence (a state of permanent growth arrest) or undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death). This process leads to a reduction in tissue regeneration and function, contributing to the aging of organs and tissues over time.
