Nitrogen-fixing microorganisms in the rhizosphere include free-living bacteria like Azotobacter and Clostridium, and symbiotic species like Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, Frankia, and Sinorhizobium. Cyanobacteria also contribute in some systems. These microbes convert atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), making it available for plant uptake.
