Glycolysis is primarily stimulated by low energy states in the cell. When ATP levels are low and AMP levels are high, glycolysis is upregulated to generate more ATP. Key regulatory molecules, such as AMP and fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, activate enzymes like phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), a key rate-limiting enzyme in glycolysis. Insulin also promotes glycolysis in response to high glucose levels.
