Glycolysis and fermentation are closely linked. Glycolysis generates ATP and pyruvate, but for glycolysis to continue under anaerobic conditions, NAD+ must be regenerated. Fermentation pathways (lactic acid fermentation in animals or alcoholic fermentation in yeast) regenerate NAD+ from NADH by converting pyruvate into lactate or ethanol and CO2, respectively. This allows glycolysis to proceed without oxygen.
