What are superantigens?

Superantigens are a class of antigens that cause an excessive activation of the immune system by binding directly to T-cell receptors and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, bypassing the normal antigen processing and presentation pathways. This leads to a massive release of cytokines and can result in severe inflammatory responses or toxic shock.
