The three-domain system was proposed by Carl Woese, along with his colleagues Otto Kandler and Mark Wheelis, in 1990. Their proposal was based on molecular evidence, particularly the analysis of ribosomal RNA sequences, which demonstrated that life forms could be divided into three primary domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. This system challenged the existing five-kingdom model and provided a more accurate representation of the evolutionary relationships among living organisms.
