Who proposed the three domain system in 1978?

The three-domain system was not proposed in 1978. The concept was introduced in 1990 by Carl Woese and his colleagues. In 1977, Woese published a paper identifying Archaea as a distinct group of prokaryotes, but the formal proposal of the three-domain system came in 1990.
