The three-domain system of classification is based on molecular and genetic evidence, particularly the analysis of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences. Carl Woese’s research in the 1970s and 1980s demonstrated that differences in rRNA sequences could reveal deep evolutionary relationships among organisms, leading to the classification of life into three domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.
