The main reactants of the Krebs cycle are acetyl-CoA (derived from pyruvate, fatty acids, or amino acids) and oxaloacetate (a 4-carbon compound). Acetyl-CoA combines with oxaloacetate to form citrate and initiates the cycle. During the cycle, acetyl-CoA is oxidized, and energy is captured in the form of NADH, FADHâ‚‚, and ATP.
